Ciao a tutti! Sono a Zanzibar! Di nuovo nel caldo oceano indiano. Se un paio di post fa avevo detto che e' rarissimo incontrare italiani durante questo viaggio, devo ricredermi. Ovunque: nei vicoletti, nei mercati, nei ristoranti, sulle spiagge... la nostra lingua spadroneggia in sottofondo. Sembra quasi che tutti gli italiani in Africa si siano dati appuntamento su questa piccola isola. Ed effettivamente gli italiani hanno gusto perche' questo e' forse, in generale, il posto piu' bello visto durante questo viaggio.
Anzitutto voglio precisarvi che Zanzibar in realta' e' il nome di tutto l'arcipelago, pero' ci si riferisce anche alla sua isola piu' importante, Unguja, dove ora mi trovo. E' un'isola lunga una settantina di chilometri e larga una trentina e dove si trova "Stone Town" cioe' una piccola cittadina fatta di vicoli stretti stretti e incasinati, come un labirinto. Impossibile non perdersi, nei 4 giorni che sono stato li' ogni time I wanted to go back to the hotel was an adventure.

You breathe so much history, and partly e' una storia buia perche' il commercio principale e' stato quello di schiavi a cui ha vergognosamente partecipato praticamente tutto il mondo e soprattutto arabi, europei e americani. Qui venivano portati dall'entroterra e venduti in una piazza dove oggi sorge una grande chiesa anglicana e l'altare ha preso il posto del palco su cui venivano esposti. Uno dei principali e piu' influenti attivisti per fermare la tratta degli schiavi e' stato proprio Livingstone, presumo. (No, davvero.)
L'isola e' circondata da bianche spiagge e un mare turchese. Il modo migliore per raggiungerle e' con la vespa anche perche' le strade sono piacevolissime, con tanto verde intorno, palme, alberi di banane ecc...
